Found this in the 1895 John Bickerdyke book, Sea Fishing. I found his comments about his invention the line guard particularly interesting. The book is available for download here - https://archive.org/details/seafishing00bickrich.

one of the top anglers of his day Mr bickerdyke and very clever man .He has a excellent pike fishing book and a coarse fishing book .theres lots of good stuff in them theres descriptions of practices that's been forgotten & reinvented as modern techniques .
