Jan Porter used to fish with it on the Trent. It's a tactic that's done the rounds over the years but probably the nearest we've come to a species specific bait so far.

I don't know about the wright bait for the wright fish, I have caught Eels on smelt and Chub on lamprey
when Piking. I've caught Carp on dead and live bait while Perch fishing. You never know for shore what's going to
pick up your bait. That's what makes fishing so exciting.

I couldn't agree more, steak & mince are my number one baits for chub, my Grandfather & Father used similar. I use cheap beef mince, that's been thoroughly mixed with a fish meal, to keep it separate and loose, in a cage feeder. I then use chunks of cheap moist stewing steak, on the hook, this has been soaked in little liquid additive..

Chub aren't the only fish to eat big black slugs. I once fed some to some large trout which engulfed them and then swam around chewing them like a toffee!

All I can add to this discussion is ....

Worms of various sizes ... but as Izaak recommended ... "Scoured in fennel" !!!

This bait has accounted for, in my personal experience ...

Gudgeon (bottom)
Roach (bottom and on the surface)
Rudd (surface)
Crucian carp (bottom)
Perch ... small and quite large ... (bottom)
Crayfish ... sadly ... (bottom)
Ide (bottom)
Bream (bottom)
Eels (bottom)
Tench (bottom)
Trout (bottom)
Koi carp (bottom)
Small carp (bottom)
Large carp (bottom)

As you may suspect ... my garden is never without fennel ... and for when it is out of season, I save the seed to use as a scouring material (or buy pots from supermarkets).

My variety of choice is ... Foeniculum vulgare 'Purpureum' ... easily found ... easily grown ... and self seeding. Just remember to give your worms at least a week to scour.

After watching that prog on telly last night i wont be using meat or fishmeal for bait. Not that i did anyway

I didn't watch it because from the trailer it appeared to be totally unbalanced in favour of vegetarianism.

No no, it was pretty good, nothing about veggy on it atall. Destruction of rain forest for cattle farming that sort of stuff. Amount of land for growing cattle feed etc. Worth a watch. An eye opener

I’ve had an eel take sweet corn,I’ve had a roach on a bare hook while feeding up and I’ve had a pike take the plummet,they do eat anything

Brown bread: Chub, roach.
Cheddar Cheese: Chub
Lobs: Chub, roach, barbel, perch, bream.
Meat: Chub, eels, barbel
