Mordex Merlin decal engraved in metal :-)

Post by Evert van der Plas »

Hi Gents
i saw a movie on you tube on how they engrave a battle axe with salt water and 12 volts electric power and i did want to know if that works to use that later on some reels to engrave.
I took a piece metal plate and cleaned the surface very well and sprayed it in with gray paint. when the paint was dry i put a drawing on the plate from a Mordex Merlin decal and resized it to a 9 cm diameter. When the drawing was done i scratched the drawing in the paint layer with a sharp pin so the bare metal showed up on the complete picture. use a salt water saturated solution and use a battery loader 12V for the power that is needed to activate the process, a dirty black substance appeared so i could see something was going on :-) after 30 minutes it was done and the result was not bad for the second attempt but still have to practice a few times to get the best results

A very very fine result Evert - it has that unmistakable air of vintage about it - it looks superb Sir.

New possibilities with this engraving machine to get a better picture on a painted metal plate. first i did a few tests on paper and wood to learn where i can find the best results

nice and sharp result on wood
Image
this is what i want to see and now i can etch the bare metal deeper with the salt water and 12 Volts battery
if this works i want to use this on a reel
will post the results when done

That’s brilliant Evert - it’s worked really very well indeed. I am now looking forward to how you are going to use the kit for other ideas.
