rodrill

Post by NiceRoach »

found on maggotdrowners - guy had found a rodrill, this was a reply

"I was investigating 'Rodrill' on the web as my mum used to be the book keeper there approx 40 years ago and we wondered what happened to the company. Unfortunately I cant find that out but I can tell you that the factory was in Tottenham, at the end of a cold de sac. There were no health & safety laws as such then and I remember, as a child, playing in the factory around the machinery etc. The 'eyes' were put on almost by hand then varnished over - this was done by 2 women (Mable and someone) in a detached hut at the back of the factory. I used to help with this so who knows the rod you are discussing may have had my help in it. I have fond memories of the company - shame they no longer exist. Three men that ran it were Fred & Alf Williams and Bob Draper. Hope that's gives you enough history to decide whether to keep it or not. "

We used to have our Walkers of Trowell glass fibre rods built by Rodrill. They appeared to work mostly with Sportex blanks. In fact now I think about it we had some of our first carbon rods built there as well - (I built the latter ones). Seem to remember his name was Norman but I'm stretching the old brain cells a little there.

Looking at the style of build I would have guessed the early Bob Church rods came out of the same rod building too.

One of my first decent rods was a Rodrill and that was in the late sixties maybe? If I remember correctly it was called 'Goldcrest' and had a picture of one by the writing. It was one of those old glass rods where the blank diameter was as big as the cork handle almost and was a pinky colour.

I suppose my 12.5' Rodrill with detachable handle and brass ferrules is an older one - do you think they used Sportex blanks then, Shaun?
Any hints what the missing writing could be?

I'm not sure Paddex, sorry.

Walkers were purchasing from Rodrill in the 80's. I had a set of Walkers of Trowell Specialist rods from there in around '77/78. The blanks changed from green to black although the black was only coated in black as the blank below was the common honey/yellow glass colour.
