First Edition Fishing Magazine collection

Post by Pyrethrum5 »

I recently came across this very unusual (possibly unique) collection of angling magazine first editions:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/310823060324? ... 1423.l2649

There are first editions from 85 separate angling titles ranging from older titles such as 'Creel' and 'Fishing' to more contemporary titles such as 'Specialist Angler' and 'Big Fish World'. It must have taken a long time to track down all these titles. I just wish I had the money to pay what I expect this seller wants (the collection is on at 99p, but with a reserve that is yet to be met!)

It will be very interesting to see what they go for in the end.

Festive wishes

Mark

PS By way of a disclaimer: I don't know this seller from Adam (or indeed Eve) and only highlight it because I thought it might be of interest to other TFF members.

They will make a bob or two.

I too stumbled across that listing this morning and was hoping it would go along mostly unnoticed, allowing a sensible offer to be made for several of the items which are on my want list.

I guess I may have to change my plan now Pyrethrum5.

Like you I imagine the reserve will put the whole collection beyond the reach of what I am willing to pay to secure the items I am particularly interested in.

Sorry McFairy... hope it didn't inconvenience you too much..

The list looks fairly comprehensive, but I was wondering how many other titles that s/he might be missing. I think there must be some specialist group publications - I'm thinking of the barbel catchers club, Chevin (Chub Study Group), Pikelines etc

Can you think of any others??

Not inconvenienced at all.

Like you I will be interested to see if it attracts much interest, but I'm much more of a book collector if I'm honest.

I do wonder at the motivation to collect a disparate bunch of 1st issues rather than a run of a particular title.
I know that there is clearly a financial value to them, but for me the motivation to collect fishing books is that I first and foremost want to read them and appreciate them for what they are, not for what they're worth.

A very interesting collection though magazines do, as a rule, tend to fetch relatively modest prices. I can't help but wonder which issues he has paid more than £100 each for. Several in there that I have never heard of before.

I completely concur with all you say McFairy.

The 'complete-ist' in me (for want of a better word!) would much prefer to amass a full set of a given publication then go for a set like the one being offered up on e-bay.

One aspect of collecting older fishing magazines that appeals to me is the wealth of period photographs and images that you can find. One of my favourite is a cover shot on the front of an early 'Fishing' edition showing a 'Redmire Rat' attempting to eat the dough bobbin of one of the carp anglers. The other thing I notice from having read some of the early magazines is that there really isn't anything new in fishing - from bite detection, to 'special' designer baits to tackle innovations etc. The more you read, the more you realise that we're only polishing the previously invented wheel!

The listing closed without meeting the reserve. Although someone did try a bid of £62
