Re: On this day in 1918
The whole of the angling trade has so much to thank Richard Walker for with his ultra modern outlook on tackle development and forward thinking as well as his rather scientific look at angling.
He was never a traditionalist and always looked to improve and move forward, but so nice to see traditionalists holding him so high in esteem.
I love this picture that appeared in his Biography of him casting one of the legendary MkIV's from the dam of Redmire.
Once again I will raise a glass to this man tonight, for angling owes him so much.

Not being a great one for hero worship or even worse God forbid, todays "celebrity" culture, the gentleman in question filled my head with dreams, desires and ideas from an early age, all of them which I'm still chasing, many, many years on.
I have a glass, I will raise it in his honour.
Speaking of which.....why was he never honoured?

To Richard
Not a fish was visible that first time I visited Beechmere; an utter
stillness brooded over the place and I felt the strange and sinister atmosphere which, so the story goes,
has been the cause of several suicides.’

I guess he was honoured on home turf...Northern_Nomad wrote:Not being a great one for hero worship or even worse God forbid, todays "celebrity" culture, the gentleman in question filled my head with dreams, desires and ideas from an early age, all of them which I'm still chasing, many, many years on.

...and would have been honoured himself to have seen this.
