No one really knows dates for Speedias, but that model is one of the early mass produced ones and no parts are available at all. The wire used seems to have been copper-based which is surprising, but another would be easy to make if the right metal could be found....whatever it is.

It wouldn't be any stronger though as it used the same metal. A more springy wire might be used, but I don't quite see why you want a stronger check...it's only to stop over-runs and tangles......playing a fish is done by thumb pressure on the spinning rim.
