These names for fish are really just terms of endearment. I find regional names for fish quite fascinating Gudgeon for example due to their translucent nature in Norfolk are known as Window Carp, how beautiful.

I also love that. And I do call roach and Rudd silvers. Because that's what they are. Doesn't mean I dislike them. Far from it.Kevin wrote:These names for fish are really just terms of endearment. "Where ignorance is bliss, it's folly to be wise" I know the shop you are on about DWW. used to use it regular. DON'T NO MORE lol.

Some people have 'goldens' with the amount & size of fish they catch!
Lots of 'bronzes' on the beach.

I'm still trying to work out which annoy me the most.Them that will call a fish by a slang name, or them that are unduly upset by it. Oh I know, neither. Live and let live.

Re: Silverfish ? How rude !
I have always known Smaller Bream, (up to around the pound), as Skimmers. This has been the case since 82 when I started Coarse fishing. Peter, is a local Exeter name for a Perch, Which is the word us local "bays"(which means Boy in Devon Dialect)" used to call them. I think of Silver fish being a fish such as Roach, Rudd, Dace, Bleak or Skimmers, (small Bream). At the end of the day they are all fish???? Some are bigger than others? Any fish is worth catching in my book, however big or small it maybe.

Gonks=Gudgeon, Judies/Judy Dench=Tench, Seargeants=Perch, Snotties=Skimmers, Slabs/Dustbin lids=bigger Bream, Billies/Billy Budds=Rudd, Mudpigs=Carp, Boris/Bertie=Barbel, Rub-a-dubs=Chub... Curiously, Roach are called by their proper names, but the rest are just a few of the alternate names of fish hearabouts

I did say that they were called Roach hearabouts, although I've heard the term Redfins before
