I think the spindle would need changing too. Probably best left alone and save the originality.

I'm sure the spindle is the original one with its rounded top. Not a fine tip like with other centrepin.

Yes, I think you are correct, it does look similar to the spindles they used in the Conquest reels. I was thinking of the spindles in JWYoungs reels.
Maybe the center cap is a conversion carried out by Hardys themselves.
