Allcocks guide 1956 - Jeffrey’s tackle shop

Post by Sneezewort »

I was so pleased to learn through this forum, that the copy I’ve acquired is the 1956 version. It’s in really good condition, (save for the rear cover which will soon be departing its staples) and even includes the free monofilament sample!

But the thing which closes the circle for me was that it originated from a now long defunct tackle shop I so often frequented on a Saturday morning way back in the 80s, in Guildford Surrey (Jeffrey’s, with its 4 digit telephone number of the time)

It was from Jeffrey’s that I received a gift of my first Barbour nearly 40 years ago, the ‘Border’ which has fished with me ever since. It was bought for me as a birthday present by my then teenage girlfriend, who, little did she know, was to soon become Mrs Sneezewort.
There also I seized upon my copies of BB’s “confessions”, Chris’s Casting at the Sun and later The Deepening Pool.

Fond memories of a wonderful shop.

She must have thought a lot about you, sneezewort.
Barbour coats have never been cheap, not even 40 years ago.

Bless her, she took a punt on the size as it was on the sale rail if I recall the tale. Her mum helped her with an advance too.

I must have found Jeffreys just before the closed down in Guildford. They, if I remember correctly, had some very nice cane/bamboo rods.

I think so yes. They were all things country really - from gundog books to flies, clothing and everything in between over two floors. :Thumb:
