Absolutely nothing wrong with this iasgair. Using herl for legs isn’t easy thanks to the stem being flat. Tying the knot is where it can go wrong,because herl isn’t two half’s of a feather,so it’s nigh impossible to create a mirror image. Using a fibre from either side of the pheasant tail feather would be better if you are looking for a mirror image. I like the thickness of the herl for Hawthorne legs,but each to our own.
Regardless of anything,it’s your first attempt at a Hawthorne fly and it looks great,and if you don’t like it,send it to me and I can catch a couple of fish on it next may and I will send you a photo
