I would imagine a lot of those lads were on leave from the trenches and glad to get out of it if only for a short while.

It brings a lump to my throat to think that I have poles that were made before this film was shot and used by people just like this. One or two of them may even have been there!
One or two nice 'thrones' on display there as well. I see that their tackle is described as 'unwieldy compared to modern lightweight equipment' in the associated text but I didn't see any of them struggling. Maybe we are just weaker. You won't see a modern angler that's able to run through the streets with all his gear, in fact from my experience you won't find many of that age that can run at all and I include myself in that category. Thanks for posting this, I find it fascinating

Huge numbers weren't called up until after 1915. My grandad was called up until 1916, and without looking it up I believe this was when the so-called 'Pals regiments ' were formed for the Somme offensive. My grandad fought in the 3rd battle of the Somme and later at Ypres.
