Wooden ferrule plug stopprs

Post by Splitcaner »

Had to look on that site to find out what these are called but does anyone know what wood they are made from. The rod I have just bought has two stoppers, they are a light coloured wood probably ash or light oak. Have recently aquired some wooden skittles which I was going to turn into a few mallets these are a hard wood, I might use one to make some stoppers.

I think skittles were made from beech?

Oak, isn't the easiest to carve/turn. Beech, Ash, Sycamore or fruit wood would have been the original options. If the skittles are beech, sounds like a good option.

Box (wood) is very easy to turn and is cream coloured.
The grain is very fine and almost imperceivable.

I have made quite a few from greenheart rod sections, harvested from broken or incomplete rods. The butt sections can yield quite a few stoppers and a few smaller ones from the mid sections or, of course, the tip sections from heavy sea rods.
It turns well and looks lovely once polished and varnished.

If you haven't a lathe you should be able to make them in an electric drill. I've made all sorts in mine over the years.

That's a great idea Wal! Now, where did I put that old greenheart rod section...
