Evans pole whipping pattern
Chaps, Im wondering if anyone has a picture of an Evans pole as I intend to restore one that I own.
I did not strip this pole so Im wondering what the spacing and whipping design is.
Thanks.

Re: Evans pole whipping pattern
I'd highly recommend the book; Poles Apart by Michael Nadell, it is one of my favourite vintage tackle books in my entire collection.
There is loads of info and photos on Evans poles, and pretty much everyone else.
I am reluctant to share any photos inside due to copyright laws.
Michael is also a member on here, and seems a bloody good chap

I already have the book. I'm after measurements, a little more detail than it offers.

Fat Bloke uses an Evans pole regularly. If you can wait a few days I will have a go measuring the whipping spacingd.
Sorry a bit busy over the next few days as funeral attendance tomorrow. After that running around after my own ninety plus year old parents. All gets a bit much but should be ok after Thursday.
By the way Hopefully you have not taken off the ferrules as if you look carefully there are small punch marks in them which indicate the best alignment of the pole when the Male and female ferrules are joined. Line up the punch marks in either ferrule for the intended pole set up. Not a lot of people know that but now you do.
I'll be in touch soon.

For what it's worth, I often find that time and temperature have caused the cane to move so that the original alignment, denoted as Moley rightly points out, by the punch marks is no longer as accurate as it might once have been. Given that they are all at least fifty years old now it is no surprise that the ferrules may also have come loose and been re-fitted by anglers who were unaware of that particular intricacy. It is worth trying other alignments if you are unhappy with the straightness or the amount of sag in your finished result.Moley wrote: ↑Mon Sep 02, 2024 10:06 pm Fat Bloke uses an Evans pole regularly. The method I use is, beginning at the tip, add a section at a time, to assemble the pole aiming to get it as stright as possible but with the maximum sag in one direction. Once fully assembled, the pole will be straight but sagging alarmingly. Rotate 180 degrees and voila still as straight as before but very little if any droop. Then I mark the ferrule alignment on the top, both sides of every joint with a pronounced tippex mark. This is easily scraped off with a finger nail and replaced if the cane moves again or you later find a better alignment
The pole is fished with the marks easily visible along the top and the best alignment is easily repeated when setting up at the waterside and, when you are fishing a short line, re-assembling the sections you might have removed to land one of the many beautiful roach your device has caught you.
I'm sure everybody has their own methods but this works for me and I use bamboo poles a lot. Happy restoring.
These are the Golden Years. Don't waste them.

Eric, I'm simply after some pictures of the whipping pattern. As I've said, I haven't taken the ferrules off and don't intend to.

Re: Evans pole whipping pattern
Apologies for the delay. Please find herewith said pics of Evans pole. The thicker green whippings are to cover nodes in the bamboo mine came with two tops, a very fine piece of cane closely whipped. Nice seldom used as almost too fine. The top used the most is a very bendy whalebone tip, whipped into a more robust cane top. This is the most used top as it is quite strong and coped with a river Mole Barbel from Mr Nadell's stretch of river. Fatty failed to tell him of this fact, as the feeling was they were his pets and didn't want to upset him. As it was Fatty hoicked out roach to 1lb 13oz and a lot of tench from his pond. And bored him senseless talking about pies although he did like the pork pie sliver offered to him. Any way pics:
Hopefully they are self explanatory and suffice.

Dear Gobio Gobio
More pics for your delectation:
These should give you a rough idea of how the whipping goes. Basically the design is simple, with the thicker whipping covering any nodes or imperfections in the bamboo, with three sets of three thin whippings between
The nodes. Don't worry if three sets of three thin whippings won't fit correctly as Evans just fitted two in the spaces available.
Any way hopefully that has got you started.
Show me when you have finished before you varnish to ascertain if it looks right. I am sure it will but don't panic if the measurements are not exact because originally the whipping was done by eye and seldom measured. Experience being the key.
