A few amateur DIY floats

Post by TrotOn »

I've lurked for a while mainly viewing the beautiful DIY float maker offerings to the forum for quite some time , so now I've joined, I've plucked up the courage to post some of my own.

Whilst not strictly Vintage, some of these are certainly in the style of tried and tested traditional patterns.

This particular selection are very personal to me as these were also the first introduction to float making with my youngest son quite a few years ago.

Most of the equipment used was also DIY'd, like the "lathe"...simple electric drill on a knocked up wooden block with floating end guide/stock.

Anyway, as life often does, I've had a few curve balls thrown along the way but fully intend to restart making floats as a pleasure past time over the winter.

These were made to cover small burns and wild trout, the lady of the stream and also to cover tidal estuaries with herring strips for the sea trout.

Thanks for showing the floats Troton. They are impressive and much better than my efforts.
Would it be possible for you to show your DIY Lathe, by any chance ?

All the best ! :Hat:

Lovely floats, TrotOn!
I was hoping, you would show us a few pictures of your floats, when I read your introduction. Thank you for sharing your work with us!

Thank you sir!

If I can manage to compress the potos I have of the simple system I will post no probs.
They are on my mobile and for the life of me I can't get them small enough to post🤣

Thank you & yes, I suppose it's quite diverse, the larger ones are used for float fishing an ebbing tide with herring strips or sandeels for the enigmatic sea trout. Lovely alternative to salt water fly fishing when the wind is up.
I used to get some funny looks with a centre pin and "course" rod fishing off the beach 😂
