Kennet and Avon Devizes

Post by EdNash »

Well everyone, it has been a few years since I posted on here about the good old Kand A in the Devizes AA area. A good start to the season (even though it is open all year here) .
Early on in lockdown stagnation and pollution hit the town stretches badly. Many parked up poorly maintained boats leaking diesel and other boater detritus.
This has now thankfully cleared and the canal is fishing extremely well, but if you are planning to visit make sure it is not in a really hot spell as oxygen levels plummet. Early morning or evening are best when the boat traffic dies down.
Some large (34lb) carp have been caught at The Spar pound Bath Road. Down the bottom flight of locks the carpers are in abundance but they will let you squeeze in. Any pound right down to Foxhangars is good, some quality tench and great bream up to about 4lb. I catch most on bread or luncheon meat (no tins on bankside please).
Come and have a day out, it's rather good and west from the town wharf rarely fished at all.
Toodle pip, Ed Nash.https://devizesaa.org.uk/

After recent rain the canal is fishing superbly. The fish are hungry as it is still rarely fished. Treat yourselves to a day on the K and A, don't forget the boats though, early or late is best. Ed

Good morning all, long time since I posted on this thread. Apologies. Well a quick update on the K and A through Devizes. It's ok............drastic drop in carp and tench numbers, the drop in tench a particular disappointment for me. Roach and bream numbers continue to rise, I have had some good bream to about 3 and a half pounds, roach appear to be be thriving, I have had some up to about three quarters of a pound with reports of 2lbers about, not verified though. Yesterday I took out the ESS match rod all refurbed, spanish reed and cane. Had a bite a cast and some superb perch, two of 3lb and others around the pound mark. A good afternoon. Last year some very big eels were about, one of 7lb that I believe was in the Angling press and I had a PB of 4lb. None yet this year, time to get the truncheon meat out. Toodle pip. Ed.

Nice perch fishing Ed, the big eels sound fascinating.

Good Perch for anywhere Ed, let alone a humble canal! The bigger ones on my local cuts have an absolute abundance of fry to feed on and consequently are ignoring my worms.
