I think they are imported from Canada - ? They were a recognised bait for both chub and barbel!

Just a heads-up for anyone who might be after a fish measuring ruler.

The basic 18" black metal ones shown in one of my earlier posts are currently available online at two for under a tenner, including post - which is about as expensive as I've seen.

One of the first things drilled into me as an apprentice in 1967 was that a ruler is a king or queen, a measuring stick is a rule.

Thanks Bayleaf. :Hat: (I love a good terminological discussion! :Thumb: ).

Your mentors were correct - up to a point - and these fish measures are indeed 'rules' and not 'rulers'.

A rule is a measuring device where the measurement commences from it's edge.

A ruler is also a measuring device, but one where the calibration marks commence after its edge, e.g. a wooden school ruler.

Strictly speaking, our kings and queens haven't been absolute rulers since the Magana Carta, although Charles I tried to reinstate the 'Divine Right' of absolute rule by the monarchy. That, of course, didn't end well for him as he found his own measurement shortened somewhat as a result.

Is a lure a broken rule?

You can get sticky tape measures - people stick them on the gunwhales or other suitable flat surfaces of their fishing boats!

A slim one on a landing net handle might be handy? Hmmm . . . where's that glue . . .

Here's another idea Olly, Taken from Angling: Coarse Fish by L. W. Clark (1938)*.

I have a fishy tape measure Bayleaf. It has a ratchet and the 60" tape rewinds on pressing a little button on the back. (I have no idea who 'Gourock Nets' were?).
