Hazel rod rest collection time

Post by TrentFisher »

I was checking over my half dozen hazel wood rod rest.
Please to report all look OK,but I bet I will still venture out to the local coppice to search out a another one to cut and leave to dry out to return to in 12-18 months.
Most of ,if not all my previous rests where collected when taking my now deceased Parsons Jack Russel terrier, "Fudge" out for a walk.
I have one particular rest which bears his teeth marks as he was a so and so for getting hold of them on the walk back home.........special.
For those of you who enjoy collecting and the wait before completing these simple items of tackle .
All the best-Nige.

Yes TF, my spaniel and I have been out looking for the perfect hazel rest as we do each winter in the woodland close to our cottage. I always carry a little folding saw in my Barbour pocket just in case we find a special one….

I have made them from hazel and I like them but I also enjoy looking for a U shaped one.. this happens when the main leader or bud gets damaged and the two side shoots dominate and rather than growing out at angles.. start to grow up and turn in..

I file a notch in the bottom of the bend with a chain saw file so the line dosnt get pinch twix rest and rid ( no need fir this little wrinkle on rest with tight V)

The U Shape makes a good catapult to..
I use ash, oak and cherry for them.

The close season is an important and interesting time for the Angler who set out to catch big fish. It is a timely opportunity for him to make new tackle or renovate old. There are no end of jobs to do, apart from those horrible things called Gardens!

I'm useless at hanging on to rod rests so nowadays I just find a suitable forked stick around where I'm fishing. There are some that have remained in situ for more than a year. I do however check out Hazel coppice in search of beansticks for the allotment.

I used to weave Hazel Hurdles for a living and every now and then come across a nice twisted Hazel V joints which made lovely
rod rests. I finally caught up with an old friend and neighbour from 50yrs ago who got me into fishing as a lad and gifted him my last one.
Turns out he is now known as the children's author Kes Gray and soon to publish a new book on fishing for kids to encourage them to get the bug.
