Mixnams Lane aka Penton Hook Chertsey

Post by GavinH »

This is my first post on the forum so hello to all. I'm trying to find out some history if I can about four small gravel pits that I served my fishing apprenticeship on in the late 70,s early 80,s. They were called I believe Mixnams Lane. They were directly across the road between Chertsey and Staines opposite what is today Thorpe park. The road beside the pits led to Penton Hook caravan site and across the road was Penton Hook marine. I believe the pits were owned by Greenhams gravel co. I caught my first pike, carp and tench from there before eventually they were drained and filled in. Would anyone on the forum have fished or known of these pits? Thanks.

Welcome

Not your specific pits. The whole area to the west of London was a mass of gravel pits, for most of the 20th century. Some are still operating, particularly round the Poyle area (not too far from the area you are talking about). Although a lot did and still do have angling potential, a number were also turned over to sailing and other boating activities. These stretch way out towards Reading.
I used to fish some of these in the 60s and 70s but not quite as far south as Chertsey. I did return in the early 2000s to fish around the Heathrow area. I'm guessing someone with specific knowledge will be along shortly.

Thanks for the reply MG, yes I fished a lot of the pits further up the Colne valley, Wraysbury to name one but I loved the Mixnams Lane pits, a little bit of paradise for a 16 year old. Almost had the place to myself at times.
