Excellent. I think that the best cane rods are hybids. I made one several years ago along the lines of a Chapmans 500, just a tad heavier, and it's one of my go to rods for touch legering for chub and bigger perch. I would add barbel, but I still have to catch one on it. There's something magic about fishing with these phoenix rods.

An interesting choice of words there...Santiago wrote: Sat Dec 21, 2024 4:51 pm Excellent. I think that the best cane rods are hybids. I did cheat a little and looked Phoenix up.
And it fits the bill perfectly for such a combination.

Blimey, a little deep for a Saturday evening!!!

The close season is an important and interesting time for the Angler who set out to catch big fish. It is a timely opportunity for him to make new tackle or renovate old. There are no end of jobs to do, apart from those horrible things called Gardens!

Well done Mark nothing better than turning pieces into a working model.

Phoenix…or perhaps Lazarus rods?….

That’s reminded me that I have, in my man cave a variety of rod sections. They have been there for years. Maybe over the Christmas period I just might see if can fashion a serviceable rod out of them.

I'm a big fan of re-purposed and salvage cane rods having made several now for myself and others. They are great fun and very satisfying to use. It's a great way to make cane rods if like me, you can't make your own split cane. This looks like a splendid example of the salvager's art, so more power to your elbow.

These are the Golden Years. Don't waste them.

Re: cane glassfibre tip hybrid
I wrote a post a few months ago concerning a rod I bought. The tip was wrong for the rest of the rod. I have a couple of tips I could use, one I would prefer the fibreglass tip only goes inside the ring about1/8" but can be whipped a good way down the length. Question, can I reduce the diameter of the fibreglass tip so it goes inside the top ring more without weakening it. Many thanks John.

If the tip is solid glass it can be gently sanded down. I would start with 240 grit and work down to 400 or 600. Turn the glass when sanding to avoid any flat spots and all should be well.
