The Fisherman’s Bedside Book by ‘BB’

Post by Troydog »

We went away from cold and wet Hereford to find some warmer temperatures in January. Apart from my other books on England in the sixteenth century, I needed one fishing book.
Choosing these 567 pages by ‘BB’ was a great decision. There is just so much angling wisdom from dozens of wonderful anglers of the past. It doesn’t matter what your particular fishing preferences are, there is something here for everyone. The names are very special whether it is HT Sheringham, Albert Buckley, Isaac Walton or the superb editor himself, ‘BB’.
Our fortnight is nearly finished, but I’m on page 485 and nearly ready to get back on the chilly and frosty Wye !!
Trouble is, the fish just don't read the books......

Yep you can’t beat BB for holiday reading. I took “ Confessions” on our cruise last September with Crucian Renaissance as back up.

We're going away for a week next Monday. That's made me think about what book to take. Perhaps No Need to Lie?

You are right Tim, there's something for everybody in that book. His Countryman's Bedside Book is another joy, especially the earnest claims of gnomes and mermaids.

Malcolm, No Need To Lie won't last you a week. It's a wonderful book and I probably know each chapter by heart, but you will read it in no time. I suppose you can then read it again...... and again.

Excellent choice.
If you have no grease with you, and your rings are full of ice, do not cut out the ice with a pen-knife but get your man to put the rings one by one in his mouth, and so to thaw the ice.

Great stories. What a book, one to go to time and time again.
My copy is dated 1946 and printed on very thin paper. Just postwar? The paper is yellowing but still very readable.
I prefer it to BB’s “Confessions of a Carp Fisher”.

My cherished copy is also a post war ultra thin paper version purchased from a wonderful old country sports and pursuits bookshop in Salisbury in the 1980's. It's the BB book that set me up for a lifetime of collecting his books. A perfect volume to read when away from the water to make you realise that is where you need to be.

Yes, just postwar on ultra thin paper for 567 pages, the last of which I read this morning. Plane back to Birmingham tomorrow.

It’s made me realise that I have very many dozens of fishy stories from the Wye in my own fishing diary, started on June 16th, 1978. Needless to say, I have forgotten so much, so I am going to go back and pull out the very special events in order to make my own ‘Bedside Book’.
At 75 this month, there may come a time, when I am glad to be able to go back down the track by the river…..

Great idea Tim. Shar can read it to you as you rest your bath chair. :Thumb:

Dave, I am not sure how well you know my current wife. I showed her your post and she responded, “he must be having a xxxxxxx giraffe - bloody cheek” So I guess I need to pass on the bath chair for a while…..
