This Senedd petition was drawn to my attention by a Welsh friend who lives near the Mon & Brec. It seems absolutely crazy to threaten a canal with death by abstraction fees when it takes water from the River Usk at one end and returns it to the river at the other! There are more important targets to take aim at when it comes to abstraction and saving the Usk.
Please consider signing. As an asset used by tourists from all over the world, signatures are helpful wherever you happen to live.

A beautiful water, spent many a happy hour there. What a load of nonsense so I've signed too. Hopefully the Wildlife groups will be on board as well.

Re: Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal under threat
Tricky isn't it. Although taken and returned to source there will be a depleted reach in-between. Significant or not? I have no idea. I suspect the pressures on the river aren't just coming from historic abstractions but a whole host of reasons. I wonder if a legislation change has lead to the need for an abstraction licence
I have laid aside business, and gone a'fishing.

I'm not familiar with this waterway and will need to do a little research...
Appplying abstraction fees does sound dramatic if all water is feeding back in to the river but as Hovis points out there will be a depletion to the river between inlet and outlet. Is this just another case of trying to 'tax' the user? In which case it should fall on the lock users should it not?

As the abstraction started in the 1790s, I think it would have been noticed long ago if this caused problems for the Usk! Wrong attack on the wrong target in my opinion.
