Point is, due to the size, "it is very unlikely that wildfowl will eat/swallow weights of such sizes" - that was the original thought on the initial ban.
That has not changed!
Now it is 'lead in the Environment' - which can effect all life. It has however been around some time!
Dumping of leads 'aids the landing of weeded fish' - - -

Re: A Ban on Lead in Fishing
With all due respect Ollie, the point isnt that wildfowl will, won't or can't eat/ swallow large leads or other man made weights.
The point surely is, that our lakes and ponds are being treated as scrap yards for deliberately dumped leads.
The effect of all this scrap being deliberately deposited over many years on the lake or pond bed is worrying to say the very least and has the potential to be seriously damaging to the aquatic environment that we should all be trying our very best to protect.
In all honesty, I have only recently found out about this disgraceful practice and am appalled by it.
In conclusion, I will ask again, what is the view of the Angling trades association and of the Environment agency ?????

Re: A Ban on Lead in Fishing
I have no opinion about dropping leads - except for the cost to me if I did the same! Too old to affect my life or any successors as I have none.
After about 200 years of lead piping serving drinkable water in many households, with little effect on the human race, its removal has been slow!
As to who should legislate for the removal of lead in any form countrywide is up to the Government.
As to 'dumping' all sorts have been dumped in many rivers etc. Take a look at the Tidal Thames from London to Teddington to see the results on the foreshore. I would say sewerage has caused more harm apart from other severe pollutions.

Lead on roofs is slowly being phased out too MR B. Roofing lead is being replaced by a more pliable and much lighter material. This is more to do with theft rather than the environment. I doubt it will be as durable though.Mr B wrote: Tue Apr 01, 2025 1:03 pm Will this include sea fishing too?
I was also thinking about lead on roofs, with all the rain water running into our rain water systems??? I could be way off track though and its rivers only.
Don’t cast doubt,cast out.

I watched a TV News - South Today - programme this lunchtime where they checked sewerage outlets in the Chichester and Langstone Harbours.
They found a variety of harmful substances - most worrying for me was cocaine! Let alone other chemicals/drugs!

That programme was also on national morning telly. The chemicals, around a hundred different ones, we're not only found in the water but also in some of the marine life inhabiting the harbours.Olly wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 2:27 pm I watched a TV News - South Today - programme this lunchtime where they checked sewerage outlets in the Chichester and Langstone Harbours.

It gets my vote, there's to much lead being dropped in our waters.

Fish come and go, but it is the memory of afternoons on the stream that endure
