WHAT IS THE MOST UNUSUAL PLACE YOU HAVE EVER FISHED?

About ten years ago a small group of us fished a place in Gloucestershire on the recommendation of an aquaintance. I cannot remember the name. On a disused industrial estate, cracked concrete and brick buildings everywhere. Two ponds, loads of fish, very busy but soulless and quite weird. Not my cup of tea.

I know what you mean. We used to fish a basin on the Grand Union Canal. Separated from the canal by a humped back bridge carrying the tow path. The basin itself was square, with concrete sides, about 20 yards each side. Surrounded by factory units. The only up side was the population of roach, crucian carp and tench.

Also Llangynidr Pond, which is an overflow pond on the Brecon and Monmouthshire canal. The level rises and falls regularly and quite abruptly during the summer months when the canal traffic is high and the locks are used throughout the day. There were reports of Perch to over 4lb some years ago, which is why I fished it on several occasions. I got absolutely smashed by something which wasn't a perch on one occasion. Almost pulled the rod out of my hands. Quite an eerie place when it's quiet though.

Secluded and tranquil fishing spots are few and far between in the south west. I haven't managed to find anything which even approaches the waters I used to fish as a kid. Most of the lakes seem to have been "commercialised" marked out, gravel filled bivvy pitches. Oh well, the search continues

Yes a very big shame about Tredidon...i absolutely loved the place to be honest ,especially the Old manor house [the top lake]..

as you was saying i have been going there a long time,even stocked the bottom lake [have photos of each fish stocked ,plus the 56 that i caught and moved ,with grahams permission ]....from the top down to the bottom in Jan 1992..

i kept a log both written and visual of both lakes since 1980.....

i was the last angler to fish here ,as i am friends with kath and Peter..sadly i did not take there offer up this year as i was a tad fed up seeing my fave carp in bits up the bankside ,mainly where i showed you that day....


My own place `myplace`is not far from there and has a otterproof fence now...i did get one [fence] put around Tredidon but the Lanson mafiosa in their infinite wisdom broke the fence.....


dont give up searching for those special places ,they are out there in Kernow ,its not what you know but who...!!!

I used to drink in the Coryton Arms (we lived in the cottage next door) and fished at the Crafthole reservoir, it used to be day ticket but its a syndicate now. Small world.

The most unusual place I have fished is a small pond near the taxi way at Gatwick Airport, it was full of crucian carp. It was inside the perimeter fence and we never saw anyone else fishing there ! Probably concrete now !

Probably 30+ years ago we heard about some circular ditches in the old Woolwich Arsenal complex near Abbeywood, South East London. In the centre of these ring ditches was the footings of an old building that was used to put artillery shells together I believe, the mound and ditch that surrounded these was to take the force of an accidental explosion, we found this out later on. We used to go over there just as the sun was rising 3.30-4.00 am and fish a piece of bread down the sides of the reeds for Tench. The fishing was frantic but by around 8.00-9.00 am it went dead as a Dodo. We used to catch so many fish you could not lift the keepnets out of the water, 95% Tench and the odd Crucian and Rudd thrown in for good measure. These ditches have now been incorporated into the river/drainage sytem at Thamesmead but you can still see the remnants of old walls that were once hidden by dense vegetation. It was a little paradise in there once upon a time.
