He's a dab hand with a camera isn't he?






It might be the camera ( mobile phone, more like) bending everything...but it seems to be bending the tip more than the butt


That rod was NOT built by Ted Oliver and if one of his staff had built it he would have chopped their hands off to stop them doing another....

And I'd have held them down for him!

He did indeed supply bare blanks and all sorts of variants of 'furniture' to finish them, so it might be a kit job with some exceptionally good cane underneath........but how can you tell from those photos?

It look,s to have a butt ring as fitted by Olivers but the transfer although out of focus look,s like an early Chapman,s to me (Gold oval type) ??????

Definitely suspect.

Just to put you all out of your misery , the
Rod in question was a Ogden smith mk4 carp rod
Delux .the double cradle butt ding was the giveaway
And the green/gold oval transfer at the base
And more than definitely the blank would have been
Supplied by Southwell as were most of Ogden's
Rods bought in .
The others that are more popular are of course the carp major and the
Carp king being the Avon type .
I was waiting for a few jump in and have a go but I was
Surprised that those in the know never took a chance

It looked a bit short to me in the tip, would you agree C&A?

It's difficult to tell from the pictures , in the images that show the rod
Full length the tip is about a inch away from the butt end section
And equally from rubber a inch away from the other end also
I will see when it arrives and let you know

I hope it's everything you thought it was C&A. But I have a half-dozen of those 'double cradle butt rings', unused, in the drawer here and know of a shop with a few hundred in stock..........I think they were made for sea rods and are usually called guarded butt rings...?


Interesting to think that the seller used the name Oliver ( as in Ted, Southwell's apprentice).......and he might just be right, then? If only he knew!*

How Bob Southwell found the time to make all that cane for all those other rod makers is beyond me......he had two staff and an apprentice.

* I don't really think Ted has been anywhere near that rod in the finishing stages, at least.
