You might find just grease on the rathcet cog will quieten it enough. Otherwise it's filing down teeth or weakening springs, which will reduce the friction provided too.

Ive been watching these sell on Ebay and have always liked the idea of getting one to add to the collection, mostly from curiosity. I would only use it down the edge for carp, is the ratchet that loud on these reels, can it be taken off.

My Aerielite is a noisy bugger, but given that the the design dates back to the 30's I'm not surprised, they are not much use for trotting altho for margin work they are brill... as seen below...

I use one for mullet fishing off Poole Quay; you're fishing straight off the rod tip and no worries with salt water or scratching it. Get a few comments from the grockles about it, too.

Yes, the ratchet can be set to off. With it on, it makes a good bite alarm

With the ratchet on, can sometimes make an unusual yet effective wake up call for the good lady...
