In response to the OP; this is a predicament that is shared by many anglers in France. I try to fish appropriately for the species that I am targeting and deal as best I can with the larger fish that often turn up. If the carp become a regular feature of your sessions then if allowed, use two rods and bait the carp rod with something too large for a crucian or tench to get their mouths around - a cube of luncheon meat is ideal.
