Re: Is buying on impulse a good idea?
Well done jack. Have to say I'd have done the same had I been watching.
Now get some fly fishing done. I got well into fly fishing last spring and it opens up loads of new learning opportunities. I also got into fly tying, so beware it's a slippery slope. I only do it so I can be at the river during the old closed season and it's a joy to see the river when Id usually be either not fishing or at a lake or pond. Also, if like the river Wear, wading is essential (owing to high banks) you get to know the river even more intimately. I've improved my coarse fishing thanks to holes and undercuts I've found whilst wading that I wouldn't have known were there from the bank. Best of luck mate and we'll do again.

Re: Is buying on impulse a good idea?
The rod has arrived and I am really, really pleased with it. The photos on the bay weren't so good so I didn't know if it would need new eyes or a full on restoration or not. Turns out it's pretty much immaculate (apart from the label) and it is good to go. It's a stunning rod in the flesh with the dark cane and feels good in the hand. Do we think it has been restored at some point? What would the missing script have said on the label?
The sections being a different length made me wonder if the butt section was short but the rod measure a little over 8 feet and 8 inches. I guess these length must be standard.
Now I just need to learn to cast!! Role on spring.

Looks good Jack! You can buy Scotty Dog transfers on the 'Bay and if you buy some waterslide paper you'll be able to re-do the Eighty Eight in a similar script.
One tip is to make an extended ferrule plug from an old piece of split cane or dowel. This protects the longer tip section in transit. Just round off a piece of suitably sized split can so it fits nicely into the female ferrule and makes the butt longer than the tip when fitted.

Could you send me a link via PM please, Sean? I mustn't be entering the right search term because I cannot find it.

Hi MD a brief translation, ten out of ten on the purchase of the Scottie fly rod. Caveat Emptor = " buyer beware" ref to summer equates to fly fishing's optimum months.MaggotDrowner wrote: ↑Tue Feb 06, 2018 11:42 pmI have no idea what that means but okay.GhyllManor wrote: ↑Tue Feb 06, 2018 9:19 pm 10/10 a very good purchase! but remember, "caveat emptor" hope it gets you out during the summer.

It was just the Latin that was wasted on me. We're not taught a lot of that theses days. However my friend, Mr Google, knows a great many things and sorted me out. I played the fool (as opposed to actually being one, which makes a nice change) for an attempt at a self-deprecating joke.GhyllManor wrote: ↑Wed Feb 07, 2018 9:31 pmHi MD a brief translation, ten out of ten on the purchase of the Scottie fly rod. I wonder, is there a Latin phrase for "the joke loses all comedic value when explanation becomes necessary"?
I am aware that comedy doesn't always translate via the written word, with a lack of tone, pace, accompanying facial expression and if all else fails a wink and a nudge.
Once I Googled your phrase I did understand your point and admired its compendious delivery.

Oooooo! A it's a cracker Jack. (Don't suppose you'll remember Crackerjack?)
So, so jealous. Yes, the inscription should read Eighty Eight and the lengths are correct.
Now, you'd better bloody use it. My 86 seems to cast better long lines than short so I'd imaging your rod would make a decent still water rod. I'd also advise trying both a #5 and a #6 line, no need to break the bank, John Norris own brand are a good bet, I usually get a couple of seasons out of them.

Thanks, scott. I think I have an intrepid rimfly (if that’s the right name) with 5 weight line on. I’ll look at getting 6 too. I’ve already started looking for good fly rivers in my club book.
Thanks for confirming the text and the length.

A kindly member has already posted me some. He’s a really nice guy and has helped me in the past. I’m very greatful both to him and the entire TFF community for their help and guidance. It’s a special place.SeanM wrote: ↑Fri Feb 09, 2018 3:08 pmSorry Jack. Had a look and they don't seem to be on.
