Understanding Barbel by Fred Crouch
Just treated myself to a 1st edition 1986 copy of Understanding Barbel by Fred Crouch, I have been informed it is a very good book.

Don't hold your breath Mark, when it came out and due to some of the, shall we say eccentric views, it was dubbed 'Understanding Fred'
But it will make you think and that is more than enough from any book![Thumbs Up :Thumb:](./images/smilies/icon_thumpb.gif)

He makes lovely reels, however.
Do let us know how you get on with it, Mark.

I will let you know Dave, but for me personally I'm sure it will be a pleasure to own a book of Fred's.Dave Burr wrote:Don't hold your breath Mark, when it came out and due to some of the, shall we say eccentric views, it was dubbed 'Understanding Fred'![]()

Re: Understanding Barbel by Fred Crouch
It's a must for all barbel fishermen's bookshelves.
Personally I found it a little 'dry/technical', preferring as I do the more anecdotal style of book. I would choose Tony Miles' 'Elite Barbel' every time.
That said Fred's book is clearly written by a person with a passion for the species and that should be applauded.
Festive wishes,
Mark

One of the first barbel books I read, and one of the barbel books I keep going back to.
If you want Fred's anecdotal style Mark, get Sky's of Fire - Rivers of Gold.
I like his style and thoughts!

Hi Fred,
Thank's for pointing me in the direction of Fred's autobiography. It's not a title that I was aware of - the proverbial 'missed bite'! :o(
A quick google reveals only leather bound copies, all in excess of £100. Only 250 of these editions were ever made. Do you know if it was ever published in 'normal' hardback?
Kind regards,
Mark

Freds autobiography was only published in the leatherbound versions and not in a standard hardback . It is a very well written account of his angling life .Pyrethrum5 wrote:Hi Fred,
