Somerley Estate

Christchurch Angling Club are to lose the fishing rights on the Somerley Estate. In future, the various fishing disciplines will each be syndicated.

Many see this as the spiritual home of the barbel. The estate encompasses Ibsley, where RW spotted the uncatchable 20lbers back in the day. Many historic fish captures have come from this area, such as Colin Gilson's biggest ever brace of river roach.

More information is available on John Levell's Avon Diary website...

A variety of Syndicates will be available - put your name down!

It all boils down to lack of work parties and bankside management by the Club.

A blunt and firm message to many Clubs and Associations who rent/lease fisheries.

Thanks for the info. I have just registered with the Estate; assuming the world is still around in 2014/15 and I can actually make a working party !

Can't quite believe the lack of interest to this post, this section of the Avon is probably one of the most famous stretches of the Hants Avon and very much part of our angling heritage, whether it stays with Christchurch A.C. or goes syndicated. I have fished the estate since my teens, so over thirty years and every time I walk the hallowed banks I am in awe of the footsteps I take......Walker, Fred J, Crouch, Searl, Yates...............whatever happens I hope to remain part of it. This is like Redmire but with running water...........

I'm sure I read an interview with FJT in Specialist Angling World in which said the uncaught monster barbel were at Avon Tyrell.
