Dear sir,can you tell me as what lathes and milling machine you have,I had to make do with what ever machines were available in the workshop at the time during lunch break,didn't give me a lot of time to turn out the same kind of quality.Reelmaker

I am not surprised at this new creation, having seen the original WM coxon at Redditch, then seen my own reel created and finished, the skills that Watermole + demonstrates are beyond words. As I have said before I am staggered at the quality and finish of these creations, simply stunning, well done!

Prototype of "new" design, 3 3/4" Coxon Aerial.
The back is made from laminated ebony & walnut woods and features a rim-operated check and bone handles. The drum also features ebony and walnut with faux "ventilations" which are actually inlaid walnut and not 'through' holes. This is a trial reel and has not been finished as well as I wanted to see if the design is feasible. The next one will include a lineguard.
Have included the TFF Aerial in two pics. for comparison.

Reelmaker I think wm+ uses a myford super 7 which he restored, and possible saved from the scrap heap. I believe he even built his own indexing system (on said lathe) to allow accurate drilling of holes. In this case it's less the machine and more the craftsman who is responsible for the outcome.

I believe you are correct Hovis, I'm pretty sure Wm+ doesn't have a mill, but makes his lathe do it all! The indexing system uses the gearbox of the lathe and the holes are drilled by a separately powered toolpost system he designed and built himself. You can see a lot of this tooling stuff in the images he put up when building the TFF Aerial, a reel I was lucky enough to fish with last year.

To hold these reels is to fall in love...the detail and quality of engineering is unsurpassed in my opinion, we have a number of great reelmakers in this country but no one else combines such art in their engineering.

I'm slowly creating a Watermole page for my angling blog and hope to put up images of all his creations very soon.


Just remember fellers, he only made his first reel, a fly reel he actually fishes with, ....4 years ago....what does the future hold?
