Allcock Aerial - Model 7950-T3 (1915 to 1925)

Post by Churchill »

Hello gents, new here and have a question about Aerials.

I have the reel pictured below, 12 spoke, 4 1/2" diameter, caliper check, spins forever.
Currently on ebay there is a 7950 which looks similar but has a single spring and pawl check ie, later - which is currently into 4 figures (£1120 as I write)
Is mine worth more or much less? And why?

Thanks in anticipation

Brian

Your Aerial looks like a 7950-T3 (1915 to 1925) while the one on eBay looks like a 7950-T6 (1923 - 1934).

Assuming both of these reels are wide drums the T6 4 ½” is a lot scarcer reel to come by even though it is a later model. This is the only reason I can think of that warrants the current asking price on eBay.

I shouldn’t let the price worry you too much as you have a lovely reel there Brian. :thumb:

Thanks for that Mark.

I'm just surprised at the prices they make.......

Has anyone written an Aerial book?
I've spoken to Garry Mills and Chris Lythe occasionally (not about this reel) so the knowledge is out there...nice project for someone

There are two books that I have. The first one is called "The Allcock Aerial, A Collectors Guide" by Bob Singleton. This book was a signed numbered limited edition of 500 books which have all sold out. I don't think I have ever seen a copy on eBay.

The other book is "A Century of the Art of Making Fishing Reels" by Elwyn Attwood. This book is dedicated to reels made by J. W. Young and is full of Allcock Aerials and Ambidex reels etc and is still available from Medlar Press http://www.medlarpress.com/7791-Fishing ... twood.html

Garry Mills has a mention in both books.

Hi Churchill
I have the same reel as you and I love it.
I bought it from ebay about 5 years ago for (I think) about £450 but I think they can be had for a bit cheaper in auctions.

Thanks Mark and Snape.

I'm not complaining, quite pleased really......as this is what I originally found -

Took a bit of elbow grease, but I'm happy with the end result

That has to be the best pair of before and after photographs I have ever seen. Most impressed.
