Also forty smallish roach and half a dozen gonks also came by......despite the best efforts of the weather and a pack of marauding swans.

What bait were you using?

In reply to some of the queries raised:

Bait was a pint of red maggots. About 20-30 chucked round the dibber float every cast.

The rod is an ABU Veritas and was chosen for its length (6ft 9in) and colour. It is the prefect length for introducing a light dibber under the bush where the carp lurk. The whiteness of the rod is ideal as it does not seem to spook the carp when close in as much as a dark rod.

The reel is a 1913 Sheffield Style 'pin, well engineered, tough as old boots and can deal easily with carp when paired with 6lb Maxima. I always control the 'pin with the little finger of my left hand, meaning I fish very old styley, the way I was taught, with the hand in front of the reel. The line always comes off the top of the reel to prevent tangles.

The coat was chosen as it is the best water-proof coat ever.....about the only bit of kit the Royal Mail got right. The fish don't notice the lack of camouflage because the coat is made up of three different colours it seems to break up my silhouette.....certainly enough to sneak up to the carp bush un-noticed.

At my age, getting duffed over by so many carp in such a short time meant the next day was a day for taking it easy!
