It is a pressed aluminium 2" checkless 'Boys Reel'.

According to Whiteadder's virtual fishing museum, it is probably the first reel produced by G&Y at their purpose-built premises in Christchurch. Likely dating from around 1946-7.

I also have one of these early reels ( shown in an earlier post). Macman identified it as the “ Junia.” A fly reel.
Interesting Cane. I assume 'Junia' was intended as a phonetic spelling of junior? (I can't imagine an adult using such a tiny, rudimentary reel for fly fishing!).

I think you’re right. I noted that there is one currently on the bay.
I don’t think I’ve ever taken mine fishing, but then I don’t fly fish, since I’m useless at it, even with modern kit!

I like to use my Grices although I’ve got too many to use them all. Second cast of the season I’ve been busy Salmon fishing but seeing this fish two weeks in a row was too good an opportunity to miss. RAS comes goodImageImage

Dear Trevor, Bob, Hof and Terry,

The reel is an Avon Gypsy and mostly used on my Sowerbutts pole rods.....yes got two.

Very good with small tench, very efficient.

Found this on internet site sold as Grice and Young but I’m thinking Shakespeare?.
Sold under at least 2 names Piranha and Barbus.
4.25 x 1 in spool obviously based on the Orlando reels
But much lighter I will be trying it out on the Avon this weekend
