Very similar to the 'ridling' or 'rudling' method I was shown many years ago using a garden fork or even a long screwdriver, but on a more industrial scale and in the company of mosquitos and venomous snakes! Interesting use of the word 'stob' - common Scottish dialect for fence post so maybe the technique crossed the Atlantic?

I discovered worm agitating quite by accident as a kid. I was digging the garden - under duress I hasten to add - when the edge of the spade was scraping against a stone in the mud. As I scraped against it so several lobworms appeared. I always had more success when a stone was being scraped than anything else.

I moved on to picking them off a wet lawn then moved near to Wiggly Wigglers, which is a lot easier.
