Duffield's groundbait

Post by NorfolkTinca »

In the 80s, our local shops sold Duffield's groundbait, which came in packs with a red spot logo. The smell and the texture were wonderful! Was this just a local thing (there was a Duffield's mill in Buxton, Norfolk, I believe) or was it nationally available? Anyone remember it?

Now, we have "Bag Up Baits". Sums up the modern way in three words.

Not one I recall in Merseyside or Cheshire tackle shops.

Never heard of it in the North East either but this link will probably be the original suppliers.

Thanks Wal - looks like it was a local delicacy then! I remember it was super-fine, like boilie mix, if I'm allowed to say that one here...

Of course you can say “boilie mix”, it’s just that I have absolutely no idea what the stuff is like! Caster sugar fine?

We had a choice of white or brown crumb plus a cloud bait that was called fine brown and by the smell of it, it was made from ground up dog buiscuits. That could be the stuff you are thinking of. Especially as Duffields were animal feed makers.

Duffields, Spratts and Kestrel also spring to mind here in Norfolk. Duffield's stopped flour milling at Buxton in 1970, concentrating at Saxlinghan Nethergate (Newton Flotman) before switching to animal feed there in the 2000's.
Lovely aroma but then tackle shops did smell so nice back then unlike today's industrial concoctions.
