All,

I'm after a few lengths of ash to make some net heads. Crucially it MUST be straight grained to prevent splitting when steam bent. There isn't anywhere local where I can select timber so I'm at the mercy of online suppliers. Does anybody have any recommendations?

Much thanks.

Google Home of wood. They are a timber supplier in Rye,Sussex.Specialising in native timbers, they supply woodturners, joiners etc.let them know your needs,I'm sure they will try and help..Alternatively try and find a bowyer(maker of longbows).Ash is often used for longbows and has to be straight grained.

Thanks Grumpy, I'll give them a call. I suspect the postage will be more than the timber!

I'd give these people a ring:

Tel-07778790366

or ask them where you might get such items

Will do. Do you happen to know where they are based? I can find no information on thier website.

Well, I've drawn a blank on that and also when searching long bow materials - it would seem that Estay might give you a lead, if you type Long bow stave bow making - but most materials are Hickory or Bamboo - given the flex in cane rods - might this not be an option to consider?

Alternative - considering going to your local archery club and asking - I'm sure that there may one around Sheffield - you could perhaps consider planning an old disused one down.

Just had a look at2nd hand prices -perhaps out of the question

Try the search term - hunting bow ash backing

Hickory could be a good choice for your needs. To the best of my knowledge it can be steamed and bent like Ash.Good hunting.

It might be worth trying Sykes hardwoods in Atherstone, Warks. They aren't all that far from Nottingham ( M1-M42-A5, ), and I've always found them very helpful. I've bought ash from them before.
