Has anyone got any ideas about this Nottingham winch?

Post by Duckett »

For a while now I’ve been looking for a nicely made Nottingham winch to join my wooden true ‘pins. Two weeks ago, I managed to get one at last.

I tend to go with my instincts on these things and I think I’ve been very lucky because everything about this winch screams quality at me. The turning of the wood, the horn handles and winding cups, the delicate nut that holds it together, the integrals and all the brass fittings, the hand cut screw tops - they all tell me I chose well. I particularly like the fact that the nut is exactly flush with the top of the central cup. Even the wobble is tiny.

It has no makers marks but I was wondering if anyone had any idea who might have made it.

It is a very classy reel, what is the diameter, hard to tell from the photo?

It's a Slater made in Newark on Trent.

Apologies, I should have said - 3.5 inches.

Thank you Stefan, I hadn’t dared to hope! It looked so nice, I was amazed that no one else bid.

Excellent! We’ll have to have a friendly contest! I was going to put 5lb line on it and match it to my Super Wizard! Might put some fly line backing on first though.
