Car boot rod....

My next door neighbour has just returned from a few days caravaning up nr Garstang and visited a car boot whilst up there. He has just been round and gifted me a old cane rod that he got from the boot sale, it was priced at a fiver but he got the rod for three quid. He was told it was a 1930s rod and belonged to the sellers grandad. It is a three piece with a spare tip section, it has lots of intermediates and all four sections are between 49 and 51 inch. It has brass fittings and a short handle. I can't find any name or clue as to who the maker might be. I will post a few pictures of the rod to see if anyone has any idea what it may be.

Looks like a Salmon Fly rod other than the handle which is a bit short. Maybe a floating line Grilse rod?

OK, the front reel band is fixed nr the front of the handle so I presumed it wasn't a fly rod, but I really have no idea. Also the guides are very small and are not snake eyes. If refurbished with low bell eyes would this rod be of any use for course fishing?

Those rings look typical of a fly rod to be used with a silk line. Silk lines are very much thinner than modern "plastic" lines

Possibly a 'do-it-all' fly/spin rod. Many firms made them as anglers could possibly only afford to have one rod.

Possibly a light Salmon or Sea Trout rod. If so it would probably handle most coarse fish no problem at all.

A longer handle and stand off rings could transform it into a decent specimen float rod.

1930s does sound about right for those side mount bridge rings.

BB - that looks both an interesting and fine looking rod as it is. Why not put a reel on it and take it out and fish with it for a say one or two sessions to assess its potential. I would be loathe to start changing things until the rods capability had been reasonably established.

Most of the guides need changing before it can be used. I was hoping it would be worth a tidy up and used for tench and chub.
