Where the Trent and Mersey canal crosses the Trent at Alrewas it actually merges into and exits the river a hundred yards downstream just above a weir. On this hundred yard stretch there is a concrete temporary mooring with a nice depth of gently curling water inside clumps of streamer weed. All through the Summer a shoal of modest sized Perch is resident in this spot, fish averaging around six ounces up to maybe ten ounce. They are pin bright fish with brilliant colours and are a joy to spend an hour in the company of.
Yesterday after lunch I did just that before going back to the canal after Roach and Bream. The Perch didn't disappoint, a string of fish to half a pound came at regular intervals and frequently when coming up through the clear water, the hooked fish was followed by two or three of its companions almost to the surface making me wonder how often that happens when it can't be seen in murky water?
Later a few Roach including a pounder and a small Chub rounded off the session nicely.
