J W Youngs Trudex 111 (3)

I've had a look at the new J W Youngs Trudex 3 reel on their website. I know it is cheaper than their other centrepins but with its black backplate and no longer sporting a micro-drag and very plain front with its old style black centre boss. The reel in my opinion looks cheap and very plain and all in all does not look up to their usual standard. When some one mentioned the reel to me I was keen to add one to my 8 other J W Youngs reels. However I will not be purchasing one now as I am somewhat disappointed with the look of the reel. I know as I said it's only my opinion but if I'm not sure about the new reel I'm certainly not willing to spend £260 on it.

I have just had a look too.To me it does seem a very nice reel,shame about the micro drag though,although I don't use it on my original Trudex very often it does come in handy at times.Would I spend that amount of cash on one,no,I would get a good original one for 50 quid or so.
Having said that,the J W Youngs reels are extremely well engineered using top quality materials.I love using my BJ pin.

My impression is that they were trying to produce a less expensive true pin to go alongside the Triton, their only other true pin. It’s probably very well made but the corners cut (no micro-drag, no ambidextrous line guard fittings and printed rather than engraved lettering), whilst being obvious choices, make it a poor inheritor of the name compared to the Trudex I and II.

I think the new owners are realising that some of their target market (like me) aren’t really buyers of ball bearing reels.

I have 9 of J W Youngs reels. 3 early Trudex + 1 Trudex 11 2550,
1 early Rapidex + 1 Rapidex 11 2450, 1 John Wilson Heritage and 1 Super Lightweight 4 1/2 inch and 1 River Specialist. These reels are all very good reels. Some I purchased from new. I can't fault any of them when in use and considering the period when each model was built they all look quality though some have lost finish but not all. It's this latest one just does not visually stand up to the other models, but I am sure it will work fine for many years. It's just not for me.

Looks a bit plain, maybe the vents in the drum could be a little bigger. There is nothing stating if it's a true pin or has bearings. Whichever it is it will spin perfectly.

Hello gents,

As the owner of a Trudex I and a 2550 Trudex II, I also looked with interest at the Trudex III. I don't dislike the look of it, but neither do I have a Gollum-like urge to possess one! The Triton True-Pin on the other hand... "My precious!!!"

Phew, I need a cold shower

Confession time: following conversations with Garry Mills and Chris at Young's I have a Triton on order. They have a sale on and the Triton is £399 until the end of the month, so the collection is growing!! I hugely favour the true pin style, but I do like my 4" Super Lightweight and Okuma vt1002 which are bearing reels. I wonder if the others will become increasingly redundant when the TTP arrives.
