Can you ID this rod?

Post by Dave F »

I have a three piece split cane rod with no maker's id and would love to know who and when it was built. I've owned it for thirty odd years after purchasing it through a "For Sale" add in a news paper.

Butt section measures:- 46"
Mid section measures:- 45.75"
Tip section measures:-= 43"
Total of 11' 2" when assembled.
Brass ferrules that have been pinned to rod.

25" cork handle with a 1" brass collar and a 2.5"" brass butt cap with red rubber button.
Red whippings and intermediaries.

Total of 6 red lined eyes and a plain tip eye.

It reminds me of the imported rods which were sold in this country by Royal Seal and Mordex amongst others.
Does the rubber butt cap have a wood screw holding it to the rod.

If it is one of those rods it will be quite powerful. I think they were classed as spinning rods for Salmon and Pike.

Wal.
The butt cap appears to have been secured to the rod by a brass pin and the rubber button, a brass screw into the butt cap.

I'm with Wal. Looks like a Black Seal to me. I have (had) one. A 12' version, lined rings throughout. It was really powerful (too powerful). It was a freebie, so I cut down the butt section (moved the handle up) to make a margin stalking rod for carp. The butt cap, rings and winding check are the same as yours.

:Hat: Thank you gentlemen. I’ve never heard of Royal Seal / Black Seal. Is there anymore info available?

The close season is an important and interesting time for the Angler who set out to catch big fish. It is a timely opportunity for him to make new tackle or renovate old. There are no end of jobs to do, apart from those horrible things called Gardens!

Thank you Mr. B. The rods do look very similar. I'll settle for a Black Seal..... no number on my rod though or anything else that could be useful.
