Dark olive dry fly (tutorial)

Post by Ian »

If there are flies that could be described as staples in the world of fly fishing then the dark olive (Baetis Rhodani) is one of them. Hatching during both early and late season this fly has caught me a lot of fish. Wether upstream dry fly fishing or down and across wet fly fishing,as far as deadly flies go,this one’s right up there.
Tying a dark olive is very easy too, with hardly any materials involved, and that was the whole idea for most of the traditional patterns,so lots could be tied quickly. These flies weren’t for hanging on walls or sitting on mantle pieces, they were tied to catch fish, and that’s exactly the same reason I tie ,and the reason they can’t ever be topped.

Materials.

Hook: medium 16/14
Thread: Dark olive uni 0/8
Hackle: dark olive hen/cock
Tail: dark olive hen/cock
Wing: starling primary feathers

Ian, give us a close up view on that fly, buddy. It looks great, but I want to see it up close.
Worry less about who you might offend, and care more about who you might inspire.
