Possibly , but we'll never know for sure. An intriguing mystery!

Restoration would certainly explain the fine condition of the corks on both rods as well as the 'onion' ends, lack of winding checks, etc. whilst also explaining the '95' inscription. Of course any kit build or subsequent restoration could mean the use of any style of build, choice of thread, componentry etc. Would a check of the tapers be helpful, even with varnish applied ?
What Im sure we can all agree on is that you've been very fortunate to be left a pair of beauties with added intrigue Tonytoned :Hat:

If you were to match one against a known BJames rod you’d certainly notice the difference straight away, the early and later supplied JBW blanks have a much lighter and crisper action to them than any of the BJames rods that I’ve ever handled and that’s quite a few over the years…not scientific I know but you get a feel for these differences over time….

I know exactly what you are saying Rob. My late father,a rod maker for most of his life, bought almost all his blanks, corks, rings etc., from JB Walker. The quality was good, and more importantly, consistently good. The smaller orders were delivered by British Road Services, the bigger orders arrived by rail (until the Beeching line closures in the mid ‘60s) I have fond memories of pushing my bike home from the station with a huge box of corks balanced on the handlebars. I share your opinion of B James rods, the cane simply didn’t compare with JB Walkers.

That’s a wonderful recollection of angling history Crucian thank you for sharing and I’m particularly pleased to hear that your father held and that you also hold the JBW blanks with such high esteem…. :Hat:

Thank you Crucian. :Hat:

Wasn't G. Baker a drummer?
If you have no grease with you, and your rings are full of ice, do not cut out the ice with a pen-knife but get your man to put the rings one by one in his mouth, and so to thaw the ice.
