Wildie?

Post by River Roach »

Hay guys
I'm sure this is a stupid question, but is she a wildie? I was yet to get really exited about carp until this day. In hooked and I would like to know a lot more about them and especially this one.

Apologies to all you carp lover, I hate handling fish at the best of times let alone such a beautiful fish but it was for the benefit of the fish in this case due to snagging the landing net. Wish I could have got a better picture.

Yes, she's a 'wildie' or a feral carp which is a stocked king carp which has reverted to wild appearance over several generations. Not to be confused with the true wild carp which is a very rare thing. The tell tale is the small 'notch' on the shoulder. In King carp this is often highly pronounced but in true wild carp it is completely absent. True wild carp are also blunter in the head and more like a chub.

Although I am not a carp enthusiast, I tend to agree with Snape, what you have there is a rather tidy looking wildie. Well done.

Chance is always powerful. Let your hook be always cast; in the pool where you least expect it, there will be a fish

The wildie as its often known is not a true wild carp, but a feral. The Common carp and its various strains is the most wide spread fish and lives almost everywhere Their ancestor, the true wild carp is a very rare creature.
