What is it?

Post by Paddex »

Maybe some of you have seen this reel on that auction place already.
I would be interested if someone could give some hints on it.

Here is what the seller wrote:

"For those of you interested in bit of history about the reel. It was purchased and owned by the late Joseph Dunn. Joe was a friend of mine who was one of the top anglers in the Coventry and District area during the 50's, 60's and early 70's. I always believed Joe said he had made the reel, but I now believe he assembled it from a kit or he had it made for him.
I have had this reel for more than 30 years and have never used it."

The reel is 3.75 ins diameter and the drum .875 inches wide, the lever is like the lever on my Rapidex.

The reel foot looks like it was never mounted on a rod.
I join some pics - any infos would be welcome.

Looks very much like an Allcocks Aerial C815 from around the 1950's but without the badge?

Could a variant of the C815 (or its predecessor the 7950 -though that wasn't available in 3 3/4") I suppose, like a "sea" version- but there are too many anomalies for me: notably the backpalte which looks like its of tufnol or similar and doesn't have the bobble finish of the C815. For me the biggest clue might be the plethora of screws (as apart from the rivetted construction used by Youngs at the time) - including in the pillars, foot and elswehere - my money's on a rebuild by an apparently quite talented engineer using parts from a C815.

thank you for your expertise - the backplate is metall (aluminium?), its just the photo that makes it look different

I think everybody's missed the obvious here, if I may be so bold?

The backplate is back to front!

Surely an original Youngs check knob....but it's on the other side.......

Your right Nobby, I've got an original allcocks version , the lever is on the other side,
Also the line lays are rivets on the allcock , and screws on this one, and the foot fittings are different .
Nice little number! Get it used paddex.

May I suggest that the pawl and spring set up is for a left hand wind reel?

That was certainly my assumption, Churchill.

Ditto - and I think the internals may be off a Seldex rather than an Aerial.
