I had developed an impression of a somewhat larger water: but I know it silted up in recent decades...

A useful tool that allows you to measure features for both length and area on an online map is-

http://magic.defra.gov.uk

I've used it to successfully identify lakes when I've known an approximate location and its area in hectares/ acres.

A little sad perhaps but it is also useful when trying to visualise a pool you may have read about, as you can then compare it size wise with a pool you already know.
