Adcock Stanton reels?

Post by WildCarpFisher. »

These reels are quite expensive, but British made in Notts. Does anyone have an thoughts about them, would they make a good carp barbel reel on a cane rod?

The early ones didn't have a clutch as such but some later ones had a screw down thingy (not being too technical am I?). They are okay as a barbel/carp reel although I do personally prefer the conventional tightener like you find on an Aerial style reel.

I have to say though that the Adcock is a superb trotting reel.

I bought my adcock back in 2010 and cannot fault it.

it is expensive compared to some but if you want quality then its worth every penny.
I use it with a cane rod when trotting & its handled barbel and chub no bother.

they are very well made reels for sure. not my cup of tea, but very well made and have a good following. they run on bearings and are in my view not a 'true' pin, but in the real (reel?!) world that doesn't really matter that much, just makes it a wee bit harder in the first bit of the pull of a wallis cast.
easily strong enough for carp and barbel, but more of a trotting reel due to most of 'em having no check..

I have always considered them more of a trotting reel and I sold mine as I wasn't using for what it was best at.
For barbel and carp I prefer Aerial reels and the wide drum Speedia.

the new ""adcock"" stantons are expensive (the original cliff adcocks cost around £100 back when he made them) but are a quality reel (but leicestershire built) ,they're upto barbel fishing but the 5" size maybe a touch big to handle when barbel fishing and balance with a barbel rod ,they're a bit on the narrow side maybe .not sure weight wise .theres no good reason why they shouldn't be used for barbelling ,if they're what floats your boat

personally i'd save a few quid and buy a original cliff adcock one if i had to have a adcock stanton ,better still a original harry renoulds one or a rolls royce copy (which i do have) .personally though i never liked cliff's own stantons and don't like the new adcocks (adcocks in name only) stantons much either ,they're ok ,well built a bit fugly maybe .they're just not for me .
I try to be funny... but sometimes I merely look it! Steve

I have 3 Adcocks. 4.5in without ratchet; 4.5in with ratchet (newer) and a 5in without ratchet. Cost around the £100 mark.

Without a ratchet a bit of a pain moving swim as the line could run off!

The line tensioner was on the front of the reel above where the bearings are but I have not fancied that version.

As a trotting reel beautiful; as a ledgering reel there are definitely better reels!

Capable of handling most fish inc. carp & barbel.

Newest versions - grossly overpriced!

Edit**Seeing the above post - do the reels have the drag as described above?

Thanks - as I thought - an awkward place to use it perhaps!
