Line strength for old mkv1 carp rods?
Line strength for old mkv1 carp rods?
So what line b/s do you use on your old mkv1 carp rods? Would 6lb to 8lb be about right as most lines break at more?
What were the originals designed to handle mkv1 carp.
What about the Avon mkv1 just out of interest?
What about the stepped up mkv1 carp? Out of interest?

As my Mk1V carp rods were stolen in the early 70's I'll leave that one - The BJ Mk1V Avon easily handles 8lb mainline (I use Pro-Gold).

The Mk IV carp rod I use 6lb, 8lb, 10lb and 12lb line, the Mk IV Avon 4lb and 6lb.

Re: Line strength for old mkv1 carp rods?
Walker designed the Mk IV for 6-12lbs, WildCarpFisher, and I was always told "about eight times the test curve, max" - so I suppose an Avon would be good for lines in the 4-8lb bracket, and the SU - I would say, 11lb-20lb, making it a snag rod/pike rod, really, in my opinion.WildCarpFisher. wrote:So what line b/s do you use on your old mkv1 carp rods? Re: Line strength for old mkv1 carp rods?
Was the S/U a 2lb t/c.
I was told you had to be careful with the older rods?
I notice the 'Bishop' is only rated at max 12lb and that's a 1 3/4 t/c I understand? So is 12lb on he mkv1 carp not a little heavy?
I'm just asking as I genuinely don't know? Would an older rod not have some of it's life used up? I understand what they may have been designed for originally, but? Just really interested. Thanks.

I have no problems using 12lb line on my Mk IV in snagy swims etc, the rod handles it perfectly. But like all rods you get the feel for what pressure you can put on them.

I use 9, 11 or 12.5lb line on my Scottie MKIV. I think that may have a slightly heavier test curve than a B. James MKIV but not sure. I currently mainly use 11lb line ( about 0.26 diameter) and that seems perfect with the rod.
I have only used my B.James MKIV Avon a few times and have used 5lb line with that which seems about right.

I go with max 10lb (usually 8lb) on a MKIV and 8lb (usually 6lb) on an Avon.
I never actually apply enough pressure through the rod to get close to these values particularly as I usually fish with a centrepin or have a loose clutch on a fixed spool.

I would say that you are more likely to damage the rod with your technique. Also you can also protect the rod by using a lower B/S hooklink.

I believe there are guidelines that indicate the range of breaking strains you should use depending on the test curve of the rod, but I can't remember what they are.
