There are three things that improve with age: wine, friendship and water sense, and there's no short cut.

I was 8 and not into fishing at that stage
Chance is always powerful. Let your hook be always cast; in the pool where you least expect it, there will be a fish

Same here. I was also 8 and just moving to sunny old Wales. It was seeing Mr Yates's picture staring back at me from the Angling Times that sparked my fishing off (well that and APFA).
Shortly after that, I joined the Angling Times "Rodbenders club" and would walk across the field every night and go and catch chub.

God never did make a more calm, quiet, innocent recreation than angling.

I was a schoolboy, and if I remember correctly, the news broke at such a time that, all the AT could do, was slot in a small column saying, as a headline, "Carp Record Broken", or words to that effect. The following week, however, there was much more.
A group of us had already caught a few small carp from a canal, and so we were interested in Redmire; - a few weeks before, I'd argued with a friend who said that Redmire was finished as a big carp water - he'd read a few articles by Clifford or Maddocks etc. Well, it was a smug feeling to wave the AT under his nose that morning!

Ahh. That fish! I read the chapter of this day 33 years ago 4 seasons this morning in the bath-puts me in the mood for fishing!
however, for me the most important fish that pool did was Bob Richards' 31 lb record. That fish lay the foundations for everyone else to jump on board and create the legends. As well as catching it being an amazing feat of angling achievement-he used a whole cane and greenheart roach rod (an allcocks Lancer I think) and I think 6lb line. Amazing.
